Henderson, Nevada
I transformed the bench into a collection of vintage television sets, lined up like the TV displays you would see while window shopping from the 1970s through the 1990s. Each channel represents a piece of Henderson's and Nevada's proud history, while a few pay tribute to classic no-service broadcasts and television nostalgia.
Here are the details behind each channel, from left to right:
1. Hoover Dam – Boulder City, Henderson, and Las Vegas wouldn't be here without this iconic engineering marvel.
2. RCA Indian Head Test Pattern – Used by television stations and households to calibrate television sets, often broadcast during off-air hours.
3. Magnesium Maggie – Nevada's version of Rosie the Riveter during World War II at Henderson's Basic Magnesium Plant. Inspired by Norman Rockwell's iconic Rosie the Riveter, Maggie takes center stage wearing a welding mask and glove.
4. Ron Lee's World of Clowns Advertisement & TV Static – Ron Lee's World of Clowns was a Henderson factory during the 1980s, known for producing hand-painted clown sculptures that became collectible pieces.
5. Bighorn Sheep – Nevada's state animal, often found roaming the mountains surrounding Henderson and Boulder City.
6. SMPTE Colour Bars – A nostalgic sight for anyone who remembers turning on the TV only to find colour bars accompanied by that familiar high-pitched tone.
7. Charles Belknap Henderson – A U.S. Senator from Nevada beginning in 1918 and a First Lieutenant in Theodore Roosevelt's Rough Riders during the Spanish-American War. The City of Henderson was incorporated in 1953 and named in his honour.
8. Lake Mead Striped Bass – One of the most common fish found in Lake Mead. The water flowing from the television is a nod to the Water Street District's "Go With the Flow" theme and the nearby water treatment facilities at the end of the road.
Lastly, a small Purple Penguin enjoying a snow cone is sitting behind the Hoover Dam TV set.
