Las Vegas, Nevada
This larger mural utility box now resides at Sunset Park, the largest and most popular park for diverse recreational amenities in the greater Las Vegas area. It was an honour to be selected as one of twelve artists to participate in the Zap 20! Commemorative Public Art Series.
While other artists chose to create their boxes reflecting the Sunset Park and its immediate surrounding aspects, my creative approach extended beyond the park itself... not only to Las Vegas, but to the broader region of Nevada, while still aligning with the park’s natural setting. I wanted to introduce mythical creatures rooted in Nevada lore to spark curiosity and invite viewers to explore local stories in an approachable and visually engaging way.
Features of mythical creatures included on each side of the box:
Cecil the Serpent of Walker Lake- a serpentine creature with a crocodilian head located at Walker Lake, NV, inspired by the Paiute Indigenous folklore.
Cactus Cat- a desert legend reflecting the harsh yet resilient nature of the Southwest.
Tahoe Tessie- a legendary lake creature associated with Lake Tahoe, similar to Scotland’s Loch Ness Monster.
Helldog of Eldorado Canyon- believed to be the legendary guardian of the Eldorado Canyon Mine in Nelson, Nevada.
These figures serve as entry points for learning about Nevada’s geography, Indigenous narratives, and regional history.
The solid pink gradient background reflects the essence of Sunset Park. Each side of the utility box also features a glowing Mount Charleston Blue Butterfly, a critically endangered species native to the heart of the local mountain. The butterfly is depicted in motion, interacting with each creature as a symbol of balance, coexistence, and environmental awareness. Its presence highlights the importance of conservation while visually connecting myth, ecology, and place.
